Ode to a chestnut on the ground, 2013

Pablo Neruda, translated into English by Margared Sayers Peden with mezzotints by Judith Rothchild

Taken from ‘Selected Odes’ by Pablo Neruda, this rich volume is a perfect example of the work of Verdigris Editions, a collaboration between the American artist/printmaker Judith Rothchild and the English printer Mark Lintott. Together they produce small finely printed editions of classical texts and contemporary poets in their studio in rural France close to Montpellier (where they also grow and tend vines). Rothchild was born and brought up in Massachusetts, USA. She studied at Rhode Island School of Art and the Academy of Applied Arts in Vienna before setting up the studio with Lintott in 1997. Their books are in Libraries and Museums in the USA and Europe including the New York Public Library, the Bibliotheque Nationale de France and the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford.

130 x 330mm. In the form of a leporello. Edition of 50.

Three original mezzotints and embossments by Judith Rothchild printed on Hahneműlhe paper and with a screenprinted cover. Handset letterpress by Mark Lintott who also made the slipcase. Signed by Judith Rothchild and Mark Lintott.

Fig, 2001

Poem by D.H. Lawrence, mezzotints and screenprints by Judith Rothchild

This is a very juicy book. It is luscious, rich in language and images. Lawrence’s poem is wonderfully set-off by Judith Rothchild’s deep dark fruity mezzotints and her extravagant leafy screenprints. It is the happiest of marriages. D.H. Lawrence would surely have loved it.

Edition of 48. 285 x 270mm, nine sheets unbound, screenprinted wrappers and slipcase. Five mezzotints and four screenprints hand printed by Judith Rothchild on Hahnemühle paper. Letterpress, hand set in Vendôme, printed on an Albion, and a Stanhope press by Mark Lintott. The wrappers, in Somerset Velvet Black paper, and slipcase screenprinted by the artist.
