Thomas described these 4 poems as ‘a bunch’ when he sent them in a letter of 1916 to his friend and fellow writer Gordon Bottomley. Thomas described them as ‘different in kind’. The first three are addressed to his children, the fourth to his wife. Thomas was killed at the Battle of Arras on 9th April 2017 at the age of 39. He did not live to see the poems published although he knew of their publication.

Breton (1545-1626) was an English author best known as a poet. This collection of musings on each month is taken from ‘Fantasticks’ written in 1626. In Breton’s personal dedication ‘To the Reader’ he describes walking ‘thorow the fields, to light upon a peece of paper’ written by he knew not who but liking so much what was written upon it that ‘I fell into an huymor of imitating the veyne, so neer as I could, in description of the twelve hours, the twelve months and some special days in the yere’.
